Here we have a gorgeous 1938 Detrola model 178A table radio featuring a beautiful American Walnut cabinet, large attractive dial, claw feet, great Art Deco appeal, and outstanding performance. The American Walnut cabinet is simply gorgeous. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set. A squared off left side, coupled with the streamline curved right side, reminds you of the stylish Art Deco designs from that era. A large open grill with center louvers not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the speaker. Jet black claw feet and dark walnut tones add the perfect contrast to finish the cabinet off with elegance and style. This beauty is sure to turn heads no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in. The large gold dial is quite attractive. It features a gold background with black numbers, black letters and is illuminated by two overhead dial lamps. A large red airplane style pointer is located directly in the center. The surrounding gold escutcheon adds a nice touch. All four bullet style knobs are in great shape and control on/off & volume, high/low tone, band switch, and tuning. There is some wear to the background of the dial but only noticeable at certain angles. All the letters and numbers are legible and display nicely. The 1930s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a. Gold color with an Art Deco geometric design. All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. With the included copper line antenna the radio performs exceptionally well. The Cabinets Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine.
