For your consideration is this gorgeous 1935 Philco Model 60 Cathedral. The radio doesn’t have an rf front end nor an internal antenna, so a long wire outside antenna is a must to achieve the reception the radio was designed for. Back in 1935 most homes had an antenna running from the peak of the house to a tree or another building. Audio is loud with just a bit of hum. The radio had been gone over a few times in it’s past and notable in 1984 with the date marked on the back of the chassis. But after comparison, this cabinet was is much better condition so this set received some of the tubes and shields from the other set. That set’s speaker, the one on this radio now, had the cone seam open and a few small holes around the speaker rim. Usually caused by not paying attention when placing the speaker back on it’s pins. So the repair looks worse than it is. The speaker works fine. The radio had it’s original filter caps removed, possibly in the 1950′s, and the holes were covered with a small metal plate, then in 1984 again the old filter caps were replaced with paper tubular types and then recently those were replaced with modern electrolytics which are in now. The power cord had been cut so a new polarized cord has been installed. All the tubes test “good”. All contacts were chemically cleaned and all moving parts were lubricated. And then, the radio was aligned according to Philco’s instructions on both bands. This gorgeously styled cabinet was in decent condition, but was touched up with Mohawk’s toning lacquers and top coated with a few coats of clear. The cabinet shows normal wear but retains it’s original look. The grill cloth is a n. There is a very small dark spot on the middle of the grill cloth, looks like a stain, but it’s in the stitching. The knobs were missing on both this and the parts radios, but after some searching the correct ones were found and are on. New chassis rubber mounts were installed so that the chassis is at the proper height. Philco’s Model 60 was released in 1934 and then again in 1935 but with a couple of different cabinet design. This in my opinion is the nicest of all the Model 60 designs. Back in the 1930′s the 1.5 to 4.0 Mhz band covered the old police band and foreign broadcasts, but today there isn’t much to listen to on this frequency band. If you are looking for a beautiful Cathedral for your collection or just to display then don’t pass this one by. It comes from the height of the radio era…. Some 80 years ago. And, you may not see one this nice again. Thank you for looking. The dimensions of this gorgeous Philco Cathedral is approximately: 13″ wide, 16″ tall and 9 deep.
