Here we have an absolutely stunning 1936 Sentinal model 31B tombstone radio. The dark walnut cabinet is simply stunning. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the entire set with an eye catching fiery grain on the sides. The step up top coupled with the rounded sides adds to the already attractive looks. A large Art Deco grill not only looks great but allows for optimal sound from the large speaker. It all comes together magnificently when powered up and the bright back lit dial comes to life with a warm orange glow. Grooved inlays that grace the front of the cabinet finish the set of with elegance and style. This rare beauty is sure to turn heads no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in. The round backlit dial is quite attractive. It lights nice and bright with a warm orange glow. It features an ivory background with black numbers and letters. Different foreign country and city names appear around the dial for shortwave reference and a compass design is right in the center. All letters and numbers are legible and show very little signs of wear. The surrounding brass escutcheon adds an elegant touch. The 1930′s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a classic gold color with a swirl / wave design. This cloth is very similar to what was used in tombstone radios from the same era including the famous Zenith Walton. All tubes in the 6 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. The Cabinet’s Finish & Restoration Process. Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. A few darker spots appear on the front center and top of the cabinet. These are not repairs. They are knots / dark spots in the veneer used and nothing that detracts from the beauty of the set. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine.
